The King Center philosophy believes that every person is worthy of love, respect, and the right to earn a quality living for themselves and their family. One of the principles of nonviolence is that nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, or evil, not people. Unfortunately, due to the triple evils of racism, militarism, and poverty, there are many people who are left to the wayside in a capitalist society that prioritizes consumption over its people.
The Mile High Workshop is an organization that seeks to eliminate the barriers of employment and to provide members of their community with ‘dignity through meaningful work.’ The mission of the Mile High Workshop is, “to create employment opportunities and provide job training for members of our community seeking to rebuild from addictions, homelessness, and incarceration.”
The King Center recognizes the challenges that individuals will face as they seek to navigate recovery, displacement and beginning anew after being freed from the penal system. There are too many Americans who fall through the cracks of injustice because they do not have the requisite support needed to become flourishing members of this society through no fault of their own.
What many people fail to understand is that long-term financial success is dependent upon the system of support you receive from those around you and infrastructures that support sustainable growth in the process. The Mile High Workshop provides many people with the opportunity to recover, replace and flourish in an environment that creates sustainable and equitable changes for them while giving them the quality skills needed to have a meaningful career.
The King Center is glad to support organizations like ‘The Mile High Workshop’ because of its commitment to humanity and justice within the Denver community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied together in a single garment of destiny.”
The King Center lends its support to this wonderful organization by collaborating on repurposing past King Holiday banners to create sustainable tote bags through The Second Chance Series. The Second Chance Series department works to keep old banners out of land fields while “creating job-training opportunities in one innovative process.” The creation of these unique one-of-a-kind bags are durable and are not only giving new life to old materials but are helping individuals create sustainable lifestyles. Our Banner Collection features the official King Center insignia, images of Dr. King, Mrs. King and designed with colorful patterns. When you purchase one of our sustainable banner totes, you not only support The King Center, but you will also be supporting the people of The Mile High Workshop as well.
Join us in creating the Beloved Community by supporting organizations who are doing the work of justice in the world.
